‘Ahoy there, Landlubbers!’

We had a fantastic week at the Landlubbers Holiday Club (with kids in two social bubbles), hosted by Captain Quarantine and her scurvy crew.  Loads of piratical fun, dance exercise (‘banana, banana, meatball!’), outdoor games (Pirate Scavenger hunts, Alligator Islands, obstacle courses, etc), and amazing crafts (we made a telescope, cork boats, a lighthouse, pirate ship and a parrot puppet). There was a lot of fuss about a supposedly fake moustache worn by one of the crew!  And we had Bible teaching about Paul and Jesus (introduced by Poop and Deck, the presenters of ‘I’m a pirate, get me out of here,’ and further explained by Captain Quarantine before being discussed in the groups.

Poop and Deck wanted to learn how to be rough and toothless (sorry, tough and ruthless) pirates, so they came to find Saul, who had a fearsome reputation, and was under house arrest at Philippi.  But Saul had changed his name to Paul when he met Jesus, and went around telling everyone about Him.  Instead of spreading darkness, he was now called to spread light.  Being a Christian didn’t make him any less tough – he had been beaten, whipped, stoned, thrown into prison, shipwrecked etc, but Jesus was with Him, and he knew the importance of keeping going.  And no-one is too bad to have their life changed in the same way!

By the end of the week we all knew the Memory Verse – ‘Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.  I have given up everything else, and count it all as rubbish.  All I want is Jesus’ (Philippians 3:8). Every child had passed the Pirate Challenge (and received a certificate to say so).  And we had all learned that Jesus is the real treasure!

Great kids, great volunteers, great fun and a great message!  Here’s to the next one!  (Give us a little while for a rest though)!
